This is the second image of Mary Magdalene that I painted. I felt such a profound connection with Her while painting it—and still do. Icons are like spiritual portals, and in this one, all the doorways open. It has Her in red, the color of spiritual authority, with a skull (one of her identifying symbols.) Both night and day are behind Her, indicating that She is always present for us. She is the Patron Saint of Contemplatives and a favorite apostle of many mystics throughout the ages, including Saint Francis. Although many people have been raised to believe she was a prostitute, this story has been debunked and even denounced by Pope Francis who declared she was the Apostle to the Apostles.
