This model is the daughter of one of my dearest and oldest friends. In real life she is a very modern looking young woman. When I told her about the Black Madonna and put the veil over her, I was stunned by her instant embodiment of the Divine Feminine. I remember thinking, “It’s just that close, right beneath the skin.” The Divine exists everywhere, in everyone. I was drawn to the Black Madonna because over 200 statues of Her have been found in the same region where Magdalene is believed to have lived and taught. There seems to also be a link between these Black Madonna’s and Oak trees, as they are often found buried at the roots of Oaks, or hidden in their hallows. I painted this Madonna with acorns round her halo. The Black Madonna is said to have mysterious powers of healing.
