This painting is of Saint Martha taming the Dragon. Her brother and sister, Mary and Lazarus are the tiny figures up on the bridge. I wanted to show Martha as a pilgrim, with her scallop shell at her feet. Notice she is “tending and befriending,” the dragon, rather than slaying him. The two images on the right and left side panels represent the light and dark aspects of life—the union of opposites. Her pilgrim shell at either side.
